Overview
White pine weevil is a destructive pest of spruce, pine, and other conifers throughout Colorado. Adult beetles lay eggs in the terminal leader in spring. As larvae develop, they feed beneath the bark, girdling and killing the top shoot. This results in a characteristic drooping or "shepherd's-crook" appearance and forces the tree to develop multiple competing leaders.
Signs of Infestation
- Wilting or drooping terminal leader
- Shepherd's-crook appearance of top shoot
- Small holes in bark with resin beads
- Multiple leaders developing below the dead terminal
- Sawdust-like frass at the base of affected shoots
Treatment & Management
Pruning out infested leaders below the damaged area in late spring helps prevent spread. Insecticide applications in early spring can protect new growth. For high-value trees, preventive treatments may be recommended.
