Overview

Hemlock woolly adelgid is an invasive insect that feeds on the sap of hemlock trees. It forms distinctive white, woolly masses at the base of needles where it feeds. Heavy infestations weaken trees, causing needle drop, branch dieback, and eventual tree death over several years. This pest is a serious threat to native hemlock populations in many regions.

Signs of Infestation

  • White, cottony masses on undersides of branches
  • Needle yellowing and drop
  • Thinning canopy and branch dieback
  • Overall decline in tree health
  • Presence of pest persists through winter

Treatment & Management

Systemic insecticides, horticultural oils, and insecticidal soaps can provide control. Treatment is most effective when applied early in the infestation. Protecting high-value trees through preventive treatments is often recommended in areas where the pest is present.
