Overview

Dwarf mistletoes are parasitic flowering plants that invade the vascular system of conifer trees. They rob the host of water and nutrients, causing reduced growth, branch swelling, and the formation of dense clusters of branches called witches' brooms. Mistletoes produce sticky seeds that are forcibly ejected and can spread to nearby trees. Infected trees are weakened and more susceptible to other pests and diseases.

Signs of Infestation

  • Dense clusters of branches (witches' brooms)
  • Swollen or distorted branches
  • Stunted growth and reduced vigor
  • Yellowish or reddish shoots on infected branches
  • Eventual branch and tree decline

Treatment & Management

Pruning out infected branches at least 18 inches below visible infection can slow spread. Severely infected trees may need removal to protect nearby healthy trees. Prevention through proper spacing and removal of infected material is the best long-term strategy.
