Overview
Codling moth is the most significant pest of apples and pears in Colorado. Larvae bore into developing fruit and tunnel to the core, where they feed on seeds. Infested fruit often contains frass-filled tunnels and is unmarketable. There are typically two generations each growing season, with peak activity in spring and late summer.
Signs of Infestation
- Entry holes on fruit surface, often near the calyx
- Frass at entry holes or on fruit surface
- Tunneling to the fruit core
- Premature fruit drop
- Wormy, damaged fruit at harvest
Treatment & Management
Pheromone traps help time control measures. Multiple insecticide applications throughout the season are often necessary. Integrated pest management approaches combining monitoring, sanitation, and targeted treatments provide best results.
