Overview
Box tree moth is an invasive pest that poses a serious threat to boxwood plants. The caterpillars feed voraciously on leaves, often completely defoliating shrubs in a matter of weeks. They can also girdle stems by feeding on bark, leading to branch dieback or plant death. Multiple generations per year allow populations to build rapidly.
Signs of Infestation
- Webbing and frass in branch crotches
- Skeletonized leaves with only veins remaining
- Complete defoliation of plants
- Green caterpillars with black and white stripes
- Stem girdling and dieback
Treatment & Management
Early detection and rapid response are critical. Biological controls like Bacillus thuringiensis and targeted insecticides can be effective. Repeated treatments may be necessary due to multiple generations.
