Overview
Bagworms are distinctive moth larvae that construct protective cases from silk and plant materials. These cases hang from branches and can resemble small pine cones. The larvae feed on needles and leaves from within these cases, and heavy infestations can cause significant defoliation. There is typically one generation per year, with eggs overwintering inside the bags.
Signs of Infestation
- Cone-like bags hanging from branches
- Defoliation of evergreen or deciduous trees
- Bags composed of silk and plant fragments
- Progressive browning of foliage
- Young larvae dispersing via silk threads in early summer
Treatment & Management
Hand-picking bags in fall, winter, or early spring is effective for small infestations. For larger problems, insecticides applied in early summer when larvae are actively feeding provide good control. Proper timing is critical for successful treatment.
