Overview
Aphids are small, sap-sucking insects belonging to the Aphididae family. They are commonly found on new plant growth and leaves throughout Colorado's mountain communities. These pear-shaped insects have long antennae and come in various colors including green, black, yellow, or brown.
Signs of Infestation
- Wilting, curling, or yellowing leaves
- Stunted growth on new shoots
- Sticky honeydew secretions on leaves and branches
- Presence of ants (attracted to honeydew)
- Black sooty mold growing on honeydew
- Clusters of small insects on tender plant tissue
Lifecycle & Reproduction
Aphids reproduce rapidly, with females capable of producing offspring without mating. This allows populations to explode quickly under favorable conditions, making early detection and treatment critical.
Treatment & Management
Natural Control
- Encourage beneficial insects: ladybugs, lacewings, and syrphid flies
- Regular debris cleaning around plants
- Proper pruning to improve air circulation
- Adequate water and nutrient management to maintain plant vigor
