Overview

Thousand Cankers Disease (TCD) is a lethal disease complex affecting walnut trees, particularly black walnut. It's caused by the walnut twig beetle (Pityophthorus juglandis) in association with the fungus Geosmithia morbida.

Signs & Symptoms

  • Yellowing and wilting foliage
  • Thinning canopy
  • Branch dieback
  • Numerous small cankers under bark
  • Small beetle entry holes
  • Rapid tree decline and death

Management

No effective treatment exists for Thousand Cankers Disease. Infected trees should be removed and destroyed to prevent spread. Avoid moving walnut wood or firewood from infected areas.
