Set a Young Mountain Tree's Structure Before Ice and Wind Load It
Published 08/20/2026
Train the leader while the wood is still small
A young tree in Edwards or Carbondale is cheap to train and expensive to fix later. Two leaders fighting at four inches become a split under ice. Earth-Wise uses modest structural pruning to pick a leader and shorten competitors before mountain wind loads them.
Photograph the whole tree, the flare, and anything it will grow into: a roof, a drive, a neighbor line. Species still has to match the site. See choosing and planting trees if the tree is new.
Do not wait until ice does the pruning
Temporary low branches can stay until they interfere with snow storage. Competing stems should not wait. A small cut now is a different ticket than a climb later.
