When Earth-Wise Looks Inside a Tree Instead of Judging It From the Bark

Many important tree conditions are visible from the outside. An arborist can inspect branch unions, canopy condition, cracks, fungal growth, root flare, lean, old pruning wounds, dead wood, soil changes, and the way the tree relates to nearby structures. The outside cannot always show how much sound wood remains inside a trunk or major section.

Our certified arborists use both visual evaluations and more advanced methods when hidden decay is a material question through consultations and hazard evaluations. One of those tools is a resistograph, which measures resistance as a small probe moves through the wood. The tool does not make the tree decision by itself. It adds another layer of information when the visual inspection leaves a specific internal question unanswered.


Visual inspection still comes first

A resistograph should not be treated as a machine that scans every tree on the property. The arborist first needs to understand the tree and why it is being evaluated. The visual inspection may include species, tree size, canopy condition, dead or broken limbs, trunk flare, lean, cracks, cavities, fungal fruiting bodies, multiple stems, old wounds, construction disturbance, soil grade changes, nearby targets, and recent weather or storm history.

These observations help the arborist decide whether internal testing is useful and where the test should be performed. Testing a random point in the trunk without a reason would provide less useful information. Meet the team if you want more background on the arborists who perform this work.


The question is usually how much sound wood remains

A cavity or decay area does not automatically mean the entire tree is hollow. The arborist may need to understand how internal deterioration relates to the tree's size, structure, loads, and remaining wood. A resistograph reading can help identify changes in resistance that may correspond with denser wood, decayed wood, cavities, or other internal differences. The arborist interprets that information alongside the external condition.

Ask what visual sign led to the test, where the reading was taken, what the resistance pattern showed, whether another reading is needed, how the result affects the recommendation, what nearby targets were considered, whether pruning, support, monitoring, or removal would be discussed, and when the tree should be reviewed again. The goal is understanding the decision, not receiving a graph with no explanation.


A tree can contain decay and still require context

Trees are living structures. They can grow around wounds, compartmentalize damaged areas, and continue functioning with internal defects that would be unacceptable in a manufactured post or beam. That does not mean internal decay should be ignored. It means the arborist evaluates more than whether decay exists.

The recommendation may also consider the location of the decay, the extent of sound wood, tree species, crown weight, multiple trunks or weak unions, wind exposure, snow load, root condition, soil disturbance, proximity to homes, roads, parking, or gathering areas, the importance of the tree to the property, and reasonable mitigation options. Mountain conditions affect the load conversation

Trees in Aspen, Snowmass, Vail, Edwards, Basalt, and other mountain communities can experience heavy snow, strong winds, short growing seasons, drought stress, and abrupt weather changes. Those conditions affect how the tree is loaded and how the property owner uses the surrounding area.

A mature tree beside a mountain driveway may be regularly exposed to snow storage, vehicle traffic, grade changes, and root-zone compaction. A tree near a home may receive altered drainage or construction activity that did not exist when it was young. The internal reading should therefore be interpreted as part of the whole mountain site, not as an isolated laboratory number.


Testing may support preservation

Advanced assessment is not only used to justify removal. It can also provide information that supports keeping an important tree when the arborist believes reasonable management remains available. Depending on the findings, the discussion could include selective pruning, crown-weight reduction, cabling or bracing, limiting use beneath a particular area, root-zone protection, plant-health care, follow-up inspection, another internal reading later, removal of one compromised section, or full removal when other options are not appropriate.

Testing does not make the future certain

A tree is exposed to changing conditions after the assessment. Storms occur. Soil becomes wetter or drier. Roots are disturbed. New defects can develop. Existing decay can progress. The resistograph result documents internal resistance at the tested location and time. It does not promise that a tree cannot fail.

Ask what follow-up schedule fits the finding and which changes should trigger an earlier call. Those changes may include new cracks, sudden lean, fresh soil lifting, broken support hardware, large branch failure, rapid canopy decline, construction near the root zone, new fungal growth, storm damage, and changes in the target area beneath the tree.


Keep the report with the property records

We provide written reports for risk evaluations, health consultations, preservation plans, insurance documentation, HOA needs, permits, and other professional uses. A report involving advanced decay analysis should identify the tree clearly and explain the result in language that another professional can understand later.

Save tree photographs, a site map or location, visual findings, resistograph readings, the recommendation, work completed, support-system information, the follow-up date, and future inspection notes.
